Editorial Review (from Amazon.com)

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear of pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas turns 12 he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now, it is time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Lin Snow thinks this book is Excellent.

One of the most outstanding children's books written in a long time.

A quick, easy read that has layers upon layers of depth to be discovered as you reread it again, and again!

Makes adults and children reconsider what happens on our planet, and how ignoring our problems does not make them go away.

Loveable characters, expertly written. Plenty of surprises and lots to make you think. Share it with a kid around age 10 and it should make for some interesting discussions!

The only thing I disliked about this book was its length. It's a children's book, which no doubt explains the length, but just as one is really getting into the story, it stops.

It was fascinating on so many levels that it seemed fresh every time I read it. I was continually surprised by the world created by Lois Lowry, even though I had a pretty good idea what the book was about. We discover what a shadowed world the characters live in only slowly, and each time we discover something else that was taken away from them in the interests of safety, there is a sense of loss. I've never read anything like it.

I think that this book was a good example of someone who knows how to write effectively. There are not too many authors who can convey this type of existance in so short a book.

I must admit that I would ahve liked a more concrete ending as to what exactly happened to the poor child, but I am still content with what it gave me. I can interpret it myself.

The message of the book is an excellent one, such as you wouldn't normally find in a children's book. A life with the freedoms from is not necessarily the best life. You miss out on a lot when you wish to have perfection. And perfection is never truly possible.

All inall it is not only a book worth reading it is a book worth buying.
