Editorial Review (from Amazon.com)
At last, Ayn Rand's masterpiece is available to her millions of loyal readers in trade paperback. With this acclaimed work and its immortal query, "Who is John Galt?", Ayn Rand found the perfect artistic form to express her vision of existence. Atlas Shrugged made Rand not only one of the most popular novelists of the century, but one of its most influential thinkers.
Atlas Shrugged is the astounding story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world--and did. Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged stretches the boundaries further than any book you have ever read. It is a mystery, not about the murder of a man's body, but about the murder--and rebirth--of man's spirit.
* Atlas Shrugged is the "second most influential book for Americans today" after the Bible, according to a joint survey conducted by the Library of Congress and the Book of the Month Club

This, like all other Ayn Rand books, was superbly written with insight into human nature and society as a whole. It is based upon Rand's philosophy called, "Objectivism" that revolves around the idea that people should be selfish in that the motivation for every action is for the benefit of oneself. This might sound a bit self-centered, and it should, but if you sit down and think about it, Rand hit upon the very basis of society. Her point of view is that if we all do the best for ourselves, then we can also do the best for society rather than letting the "morality of death" take over the world.
The characters are well developed and their interactions are surprising and accurate at the same time. As always, there is one main character who is the "ideal" in the world of Ayn Rand; the one person who exemplifies all of her beliefs and wisdom so as to guide the reader towards her philosophy. The main characters are Dagny Taggart and Hank Rearden, who represent those of us capable of learning how to live for ourselves and who must learn if they can abandon their way of life.
I highly recommend all of Ayn Rand's books, including Anthem and the Fountainhead. Her stories are well thought out and her characters are magnificent models playing out the good and bad in the world in reguards to Objectivism.
The only question left for the reader to ponder throughout the book besides whether or not to agree with Rand's radical ideas on living is, "Who is John Galt?"
