OMFG. This is one of the best books I have read in the last couple years. The first two in the series A Song of Ice and Fire -- namely A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings -- are excellent for sure, but A Storm of Swords surpasses them with ease. The story of the battle for the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros continues, with the most unexpected twists and turns in the fates of Houses Stark, Lannister and Targaryen. George R.R. Martin keeps in mind that the story is paramount, and no one character -- each and every one is dispensable, and when he does get rid of them you actually feel shocked and bewildered. But that's what makes it such an utterly exciting read. I was on tenterhooks throughout! Moreover, it's well-written and full of interesting subplots and characters that link up nicely to events that were detailed in the earlier books.
I'm completely floored, and I couldn't recommend this series more.
Just a sidenote -- for infusing so much originality into his work, GRRM sometimes seems to lapse and take scenes and names straight from Tolkien. It doesn't happen frequently but it can be noticed when it does. I suppose this is some sort of tribute to the great writer? Otherwise I'm a little confuzzled as to why he included them.
