Dale Brayden thinks this book is Good.
Shortly after the police complete a major drug arrest at a large estate, a fire breaks out in one of the estate's out-buildings. The following day a body is discovered in the ashes. After some delay it is discovered that the body is that of one of the estate's staff, not reported missing because he was supposed to be on holiday.
Inspector Peach and Sergeant Blake soon learn that 5 people, possibly 6, had motive to kill the murdered man, and that all the suspects are withholding information, and none can adequately account for their whereabouts at the time of the murder.
This was one of the better Peach/Blake mysteries. Not as humorous as some, but an enjoyable read.
