marcia thinks this book is Good.

This book was a read for the community book project at the university where i work and was suggested for the purpose of familiarizing our community with aspects of different cultures. It was an interesting story that left me feeling both sad and very, very fortunate to have been born in America.

Southern Girl thinks this book is Excellent.

In one of his more recent blog entries, Clay Aiken recommended this book. I loved it, and I'm pretty sure I would have even if it hadn't come from him. ;) It's the story of two boys in Afghanistan, one the son of a wealthy man, and the other the son of the man's servant. The boys grow up together, play together, but an act of cowardice on the part of one boy forever alters the life of the other. The author takes great pains to show the changing political landscape of the country over the years as the boys grow up. It was really very good, particularly as the author's debut.

Za thinks this book is Excellent.

The Kite Runner traces the recent sociopolitical history of Afghanistan, from pre- to post-Taliban, in the context of the protagonist Amir and his memories of his childhood friend, Hassan. It tells a deep and moving story of love, friendship, dreams, cultures and life on both sides of the fence. It's an easy read, never boring, offering you something new on every page. Hosseini's much-vaunted debut is one that really does live up to all the praise that has been lavished on it. The beauty of their characters lies perhaps in their simplicity, charcoal portraits that are striking and memorable. The language is clean, crisp and expressive, and for once, here's a work of fiction that actually floats because of its story, and not the fame of the writer or his fancy, effete vocabulary. Great stuff.

Michael thinks this book is Excellent.

Fictional, but gives vivid portrail of life in old Afghanistan. Love the colorful and vibrant imagery and deep and personal storyline. Powerful book.

Rebecca Adler thinks this book is Excellent.

I don't know that there's much to add to the other reviews already presented on this page. The Kite Runner is an amazing tale in a setting largely unknown to westerners before September 11. Hosseini does a wonderful job of describing Afghanistan both before and after the Taliban. Some of the plot twists were predictable, but it didn't make the read any less enjoyable. Some of the imagery was difficult for me to swallow, especially the scenes of abuse, but I got through it and was glad I did. I highly recommend this book for a more insightful look at a country torn apart by war for more than two decades.
