“The most lacerating tale of drug addiction since William S. Burroughs’ Junky.” —The Boston Globe

“Again and again, the book delivers recollections that leave the reader winded and unsteady. James Frey’s staggering recovery memoir could well be seen as the final word on the topic.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“A brutal, beautifully written memoir.”—The Denver Post

“Gripping . . . A great story . . . You can’t help but cheer his victory.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

Cindy thinks this book is Excellent.

I could not stop thinking about this book for days after. Everything about him & his story amazed me. What a strong, intelligent, courageous, inspirational person. I've woken in the middle of the night with his words repeating over & over in my head. His book was written like poetry. Intense, crazy poetry. He could write a single sentence that would go on for nearly half a page. He could write an entire page filled with one word sentences. James Frey.

Ok, those were my exact words a few days after I read the book. There has been so much controversary surrounding it since then. It is a memoir & not everything has to be 100% accurate anyway. James now calls this a combination of facts about his life & certain embellishments. It is a subjective truth, altered by the mind of a recovering alcoholic & drug addict. I read somewhere that when he first wrote the book, they didn't know what they were going to sell it as. Fiction or memoir? When memoir was chosen, nothing in the book was changed. It sold a lot of copies & the lies got a bit out of hand. All that aside, the bottom line is this was a great book, in my opinion at least. I still recommend you go read this.

Despite the controversy surrounding this book, I found it to be quite inspiring.
