Editorial Review (from Amazon.com)
Cousins, mothers, sisters, dolls, dogs, best friends: these are the fixed points in Jo Ann Beard's universe, the constants that remain when the boys of her youth - and the men who replace them - are gone. This widely praised collection of autobiographical essays summons back, with astonishing grace and power, moments of childhood epiphany as well as the cataclysms of adult life: betrayal, divorce, death. It is a book that heralds the arrival of an immensely gifted and original writer.User Reviews (1) Login or create an account to write a review.
Lin Snow thinks this book is Excellent.
This is one collection of short stories that I've read many many times over. Jo Ann Beard is a phenominal writer, and her short stories are amung the best.
The stories are autobiographical, but do not slip into overused childhood trauma or trite love stories or gooshy family moments. Completely original and completely memorable.
Also check out Amy Hempel, though I enjoy Beard's work more.
One of those fantastic authors that doesn't get the attention she deserves!
