Tatooine Ghost - Rated Nothing Special

Maybe it's just my post-prequel, bitter-fangirl sensibilities coming out too strongly, but this book went down like the cake frosting you knew you shouldn't have swiped without the cake: tastes way too sweet anyway, and leaves you with a wax mouth and a splitting headache.

In a nutshell: Leia (and supporting characters Han and Chewie) runs around in a desert while wrestling with her family heritage. She accidentally runs into (or hears about) every Episode I Tatooine character not currently dead, and they all provide stunning insights into the human element of the father she hates. Meanwhile, our three musketeers wander all over the planet trying to recover an Alderaanian moss painting host to a top-secret encryption key for a top-secret communications network vital to the survival of the New Republic.

Denning has some nice vignettes, really he does--including a surprise entrance by one of my favorite characters--but the whole never rises beyond transitional-fluff status. It's not bad, per se. It's just yet another author trying desperately to redeem George Lucas's cesspit, and meeting inevitable, clichÃ©-ridden failure.
