The Swallows of Kabul - Rated Excellent
Depicting the bleak conditions of Kabul under the Taliban, Swallows of Kabul is a heart-rendering tale of survival and faith--that is, in the human spirit. Under a psuedonym, Khadra skillfully shapes a moving examination of personal crisis. Beautifully written, the language of the novel and the raw depictions of life in Kabul reminded me of Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature). The sights and sounds of Kabul are vivid, developing into a rousing conclusion. The novel invokes an emotional engagement, ranking it high in my lists of excellence.
