Civil War Era Etiquette: Martine's Handbook & Vulgarisms in Conversation - Rated

From 'The art of conversation', to the 'etiquette of the Ball and Assembly Room', to 'Domestic Duties', this lovely little book, orginally published in 1866, covers all angles of politness and etiquette, as well as how to dress, write letters, carve meat and much more. In the back are a few black and white illistrations from Godey's ladie's book, and a rather lengthy list of 'vulgarisms' - word and terms that were considered vulgar slang. It's amazing ot me, some of the things that were considered vulgar - 'well to do', instead of 'well off', was a vulgar term, as was the word 'obnoxious', and hundreds more. An excellent book for the civil war buff, or those wishing to improve their etiquette. :o)
